Obesity Causes Two Kinds Of Blindness, by D.A. Miller, Ph.D.
Summary: Obesity causes two kinds of blindness, 1-willful and 2-medical.
Part 1: "
There are none so blind, as those who would not see."
This oft repeated quotation is said to come from the new testament, but I have yet to find where. Everyday observations convince me that it is true, anyway, without religious underpinnings.
» Obese people cannot see that they are raising their risks of almost every disease.
» Obese people cannot see that excess fat is not conducive to long life.
» Over-eaters refuse to see that obesity is the single largest cause of cancer after tobacco.
» Obese parents cannot see that their children are overweight.
» Fatties can't see that most diet advice is nonsense.
» From a marketing expert, "The most sure-fire way to sell a weight-loss product is to convince people that it will enable them to lose weight while still eating as much as they want!"
Part 2: Medical News, random samples
» The Royal National Institute of the Blind Scotland (RNIB Scotland) reported that obese people are at double the risk of losing their sight, 6 September 2006. They cited increases in age-related macular degeneration, diabetes related retinopathy, high blood pressure related glaucoma, and more.
» Publications by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tell us that "Seven of 10 deaths, or more than 1.7 million each year, are caused by chronic diseases" and that the major risk factors for chronic diseases are "tobacco use, poor nutrition, and lack of physical activity"
» USA Today [2007] reported on the work of Keith Ayoob, a registered dietitian who works with overweight children and their families in New York City. "50% of parents who have overweight or obese children don't realize their children weigh too much."
» From Cancer Research UK Press Release, "Obese people turn a blind eye to health risks", 6 January 2006. "Nearly 50 per cent of obese and overweight people did not believe that eating healthily could help reduce cancer risk; almost two thirds (64 per cent) were unaware that regular exercise could reduce risk; more than 80 per cent did not know the importance of maintaining a healthy body weight and almost 80 per cent failed to recognise the importance of moderation when drinking alcohol to reduce cancer risk."
Part 3: Call to action
» Are you one of the two thirds of people in modern world who are overweight?
» Do you have fat kids?
» Are you in denial?
» Are you one who would not see?
If you are still alive, it is not too late to change.
